Kentler International Drawing Space is a non profit arts organization located in Red Hook, Brooklyn.

The K.I.D.S. Art Education program brings innovative art-making experiences to students, teachers, and families in and around Red Hook. With our diverse community in mind, Kentler is committed to using contemporary art as a platform for inquiry, exploration, and empowerment. All programs are based on Kentler's exhibitions of drawings and works on paper.

Our programming includes School, After-School, Residency, and Drawing Together family weekend workshops.

Drawing Together: Summer 2014

Kentler's current show, "Large & Small: Selections from the Kentler Flatfiles," is full of intricate, dramatic and inspirational artworks. Particularly eye-catching is Chech artist Jiri Kornatovsky's so-called "big potato" drawing, which was the focus of this morning's Drawing Together!

Teaching Artist Ruth Wetzel introduced a couple of key words to drive the exploration: contour and organic form. She then asked families to think about the differences between flat and round objects. How does an artist render a shape "round" or "flat?" What kinds of techniques are used to show light reflection, volume, and size? Using potatoes, peanuts, lemons, pears, and pomegranates as models, participants created round and flat depictions and even imagined their own "organic" scenes and beings.
