In April, families saw over 150 drawings and works on paper donated by artists in support of our 100 Works on Paper Benefit. Thanks to the rich diversity of artists and artworks who gave to our fundraiser this year, there was no shortage of themes, techniques and palettes to explore. From observational drawing, to imaginative collages, to 3D paper sculpture, families found endless ways to experiment with materials, expand the definition of drawing and create their own unique artworks.
In June, we opened Mapping Spaces: Carte Blanche, Selections from the Kentler Flatfiles, an exhibition of 25 works by 26 artists guest-curated by Dita Amory. This show focused on the subtle and conceptual aspects of "mapping" in mark-making, including the movement of line, the definition of space and volume, and the translation of 3D objects onto a 2D plane. In response to this work, families made prints, painted evocative watercolor landscapes and drew from natural elements observed in the artwork.
Take a look at some of the gorgeous results!
Big thanks to all of the families who joined us for these workshops, and thanks to Teaching Artists Brana and Victoria for making the projects such a success! Join us in September for the next round of Drawing Together workshops, starting Sept. 10 with the opening of Language Landscape by artist Golnar Adili. And follow K.I.D.S. Art Education on Facebook to get the latest updates!
