Spring 2016 School Programs: Gallery Visits

It's hard to believe our Spring 2016 School Programs are already coming to an end! This season, we invited K - 5 students from P.S. 15, P.S. 146 and PAVE to visit the gallery and explore our current exhibitions, In Bold Colors and WORDROACH.

In the front space, students looked at text-based drawings and 3-D objects by artist K. Saito. They discussed Saito's unique installation with Teaching Artist Victoria and created their own "wordroaches" in response. Students incorporated different methods of lettering (handwritten, stamped, applied, stenciled) with their knowledge of insect parts and characteristics. Students selected or invented their own "foolish language," which they then transformed into bugs. Younger students received pre-cut letter stickers to inspire word and sound-associations. One lucky class even got to meet Mr. Saito and ask questions about his work!

In the large gallery space, students explored gesture and narrative in the artwork of Orlando Richards. They talked with Teaching Artist Ruth about how gesture aids expression, and how our bodies can tell stories. Students created several small pastel drawings of figures stretching to touch all sides of a square, colored paper. In the classroom, these expressive drawings will be combined with the text-based drawings to produce a final project. Stay tuned for updates on Post Visits in the coming weeks!

As always, thanks to our educators, partner teachers, super-talented students, and funders for making these experiences possible! We are excited and proud to offer over 400 Red Hook children the opportunity to see, discuss, and create in response to innovative contemporary artwork.
