We at K.I.D.S. Art Ed. have been busy this month starting up our spring Family, After-School, and School Programs. Our first Drawing Together of the season was last Saturday, February 8th. That same evening, we held the Opening Reception for our current show-- Circumstances: Selections from the Kentler Flatfiles. The artists from this show were chosen using a chance-based process inspired by the I-Ching, or Book of Changes.
Taking some cues from the curators, Teaching Artist Meghan Keane led a family workshop using elements of chance and surprise. She asked each participant to create a list of line types, colors, shapes, and adjectives related to art making. Then, each list was torn into strips of paper, placed in a bucket, and selected randomly. Once a word was chosen, everyone in the room had to add that element to their drawing.
We ended up with fluffy lines, "spiderweb" lines, "lots of dots," and a whole array of colors and textures. Kids and parents couldn't wait to hear what command was coming up next! Have a look at some of their layered creations:
After Drawing Together, Meghan headed over to P.S. 15, the outpost of Extreme Kids and Crew. This organization, which is new to Red Hook, offers play-focused programming to children with disabilities and their families. We are working together this spring to provide hands-on art workshops to some of these talented kids and we're seeing fantastic results!
For this class, Meghan presented a modified version of the Drawing Together exercise with some added materials such as sticks, scissors, and cardboard cut-outs. Participants were asked to drop the objects onto their paper and trace them wherever they landed.
Then, she pulled out the bucket of chance operations and asked them to add to their drawings in exciting ways!
Thanks for checking in on the K.I.D.S. Art Ed. blog! I'll keep you updated as we begin School and After-School Programs in the coming weeks. Stay warm out there!
